Welcome

The Association of Environmental Engineering and Science Professors (AEESP) is made up of professors in academic programs throughout the world who provide education in the sciences and technologies of environmental protection.

Founded in 1963 as a private nonprofit organization, AEESP has more than 700 members in universities throughout the world. Read more in the About Us section or please contact us with any questions. AEESP thanks our Sustaining Members for their continuing support.

2012 AEESP Distinguished Lecturer

Desmond Lawler is the Nasser I. Al-Rashid Chair in Civil Engineering and a member of the Academy of Distinguished Teachers at the University of Texas. His research and teaching focus on physical/chemical treatment processes for water and wastewater, with greater emphasis on drinking water treatment. Throughout his career, he has studied particle removal processes and more recently has been studying desalination and processes for the removal of pharmaceuticals and personal care products. He served as the Secretary of AEESP for two years early in his career, and has been a board member of the Water Science and Research Division of AWWA for the past several years. He is a member of the Drinking Water Committee of the Science Advisory Board of the USEPA. Des has received several teaching awards at UT and his contributions to research and education have been recognized with major awards by AWWA, WEF, and AMTA. His 75 MS graduates are productive throughout the water and wastewater field, and 14 of his 20 PhD graduates are academicians.

Dr. Lawler will offer the following lectures during his tours:
Particles, Particles, and More Particles
Water, Water, Everywhere: Challenges of Inland Desalination

Further descriptions of these talks are available here.

Lecture tour dates will be scheduled from September 2012 through April 2013. Institutions that would like to host Dr. Lawler must submit an application by May 22, 2012. Application forms are available here or from Dr. Jeanine D. Plummer, Chair of the AEESP Lecturers Committee (jplummer@wpi.edu).

Future directions and potential affiliations for AEESP

Over the last 2 years the AEESP Board of Directors (BOD) has set out to look at the future of our organization that we all enjoy. We certainly look to continue and build on the AEESP tradition of collegiality and assisting our members in facing challenges in environmental engineering and science research and education. The AEESP strategic plans have been recently articulated to include these main themes:

  1. Increase Global Presence and Awareness,
  2. Define the Scope and Direction of Environmental Engineering Curricula,
  3. Facilitate Expanded Research Activities, and
  4. Promote the Environmental Engineering and Science Community

We hope to continue making progress on all these topics and continually improving our organization. As so many topics in environmental engineering and science are faced globally, we identified the need to disseminate resources widely, which will concurrently hit items 1 and 4 above. A leading action item identified by the AEESP BOD along these lines was a potential affiliation with an international journal. During strategic planning discussions at the 2011 AEESP Education and Research Conference in Tampa, the journal affiliation was the most often noted topic for future needs and efforts of AEESP. In surveying the potential journal affiliations, Environmental Engineering and Science (EES) was identified as a journal without a current affiliation and with a broad scope that best fits the breadth of interests represented by AEESP membership. We have discussed the potential affiliation with EES Editor in Chief Domineco Grasso and with the editorial staff at Mary Ann Liebert. As a result we have developed a draft Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) official journal of AEESP; this affiliation will be up for a bylaws vote by the membership in the fall. The MOU is presented here for the membership as we consider a membership-wide vote on this important topic. The MOU would serve as the starting point if we chose to move forward with the AEESP-EES affiliation. To better inform the membership of EES and representative content, two recent issues were made available to all for viewing. Please consider this important topic and share your opinions… and Vote!

Issues of Environmental Engineering and Science available for viewing.
