PhD Student Opportunity at Michigan Technological University: Participatory Water Resources Modeling with Competing Agricultural and Urban Demands in a Water Scarce Region – The Middle Rio Grande basin

Michigan Technological University is seeking a PhD student to contribute to a new, five-year, USDA-funded project on sustainable water management in the Middle Rio Grande basin. The goals of the project are: 1) improved management of regional water resources to sustain irrigated agriculture in the face of dwindling supply and competing demands and 2) development of a platform for adaptive management, consisting of knowledge bases, scenario tools, and participatory learning processes, with lessons that can be shared with other sites facing similar challenges.

PhD Student Opportunity at Michigan Technological University: Watershed Hydrology, Water Quality and Modeling Cloud Forest Watersheds in Mexico

We are seeking a PhD student with interests in watershed hydrology, chemistry and land use scenario modeling using the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT). The research would be conducted in the cloud forest region of Mexico near Xalapa, Veracruz, in association with a larger National Science Foundation project assessing the effect of Mexico’s Payment for Hydrologic Services program on eco-hydrologic and socio-economic variables and on indicators of watershed sustainability.

PhD fellowship in Groundwater Nanoremediation

The MoE Key Lab for Eco-restoration of Contaminated Environment, Shenyang University is looking for a PhD student, starting in Summer, 2015. The student will work on a project to develop suitable nanomaterials and remediation plan for a brownfield where the cadmium level is high. The student also has opportunity to be involved in a national project investigating the fate and transport of engineered nanomaterials in porous media. The ideal candidate shall have a Master degree in material chemistry, environmental engineering, geochemistry, water resources engineering or other related areas.

Environmental Biotechnology and Resource Recovery

The Environmental Biotechnology & Bioenergy Laboratory (EBBL) at Virginia Tech is looking for 1-2 PhD students starting in fall 2015. The students will work on the projects to develop bioelectrochemical systems for energy-efficient wastewater treatment and nutrients removal/recovery. The ideal candidate will possess a M.S. in Environmental Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or related fields, though exceptional B.S.-level candidates may also be considered.

Ph.D. Assistantship in Environmental Engineering

A PhD research assistant position is available in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Alabama in Huntsville starting as early as Summer, 2015.  The successful applicant is expected to conduct research in the area of sustainable water and wastewater treatment and/or non-point source pollution control. A BS in environmental engineering, chemical engineering or a related field is required and applicants with a MS degree in pertinent fields are preferred.

Environmental Engineering: Nanotechnology

The Department of Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering at the University of Miami is seeking a highly motivated PhD student to work under the guidance of Dr. Sung Hee Joo as soon as possible. The PhD student is expected to perform research in the area of membrane technology and environmental nanotechnology (i.e., applications of nanomaterials for degradation of contaminants).

The selected candidate is expected to work with the PI’s industrial partner, General Electric Company, at the later stage of her/his PhD.

Ph.D. Assistantship in Sustainable Urban Water Management

The Department of Environmental Science and Technology ( and Center for Sustainability in the Built Environment at University of Maryland (UMD) invites applications for up to two PhD-level graduate research assistantships to conduct research in the area of sustainable urban water management beginning in Fall 2015. Our research program focuses on engineered and natural systems and the way in which they can be effectively integrated into the portfolio of urban water resources.

Two PhD Positions Available in Electrochemical Systems (Salinity Gradient Energy Focus)

Two PhD positions are available in the Department of Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering at North Carolina State University (NCSU) and the Department of Environmental Sciences and Engineering at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC-CH) as part of a state-funded, $1 million collaborative project to optimize and assess the potential of electricity generation from salinity gradients along coastal North Carolina using reverse electrodialysis (RED).

Graduate Research Assistantship Available in Environmental Engineering at Florida Atlantic University

Dr. Peng Yi from Department of Civil, Environmental and Geomatics Engineering at Florida Atlantic University is seeking graduate students at either M.S. or Ph.D. level.  Preference will be given to Ph.D. applicants.  The graduate research will be in one of the three areas: Environmental Nanotechnology, Fate and Transport of Nanoparticles, and Renewable Energy.  The graduate student will be offered research assistantship which covers stipend, full tuition, and benefits.  The prospective student is expected to start from the Fall semester of 2015.

Ph.D. Assistantship in Sustainable Water and Energy Management

A PhD research assistant position is available in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering ( at the University of New Hampshire starting Fall 2015. The student will work on using systems analysis (e.g., life cycle assessment, system dynamics, multi-criteria decision making) to simulate the water-energy nexus and improve the resiliency of water and energy systems under population growth and climate change.
