Brief description of research project:

The project will involve laboratory studies and/or field studies to protect and enhance the subsurface environment including groundwater. Specific projects may include research on the potential impacts of uranium in-situ recovery (ISR) on groundwater resources; research on transport, degradation, and removal of an array of subsurface contaminants; and/or research on the effects of enhanced infiltration of stormwater/wastewater on groundwater resources. Depending on the candidate’s experience and interests, research could include: 1) laboratory studies to determine rates and conditions of contaminant transformation and partitioning; 2) field investigations to evaluate groundwater geochemistry and hydrology; and 3) modeling studies to advance the application of geochemical models as predictive tools for evaluating risks to water quality. The research will address Agency needs for understanding subsurface processes under a range of conditions and will support Agency needs in high priority areas related to groundwater quality, aquifer exemption, green infrastructure, site remediation and/or drinking water treatment.

Educational requirements:
Ph.D. in geology, geochemistry, environmental engineering or a related field.

Specialized training and/or experience preferred:
Expertise in laboratory and field research, environmental modeling, and technology design implementation. Experience with field or experimental studies relating to groundwater geochemistry and hydrology. Experience with laboratory analytical and scientific equipment operation. Experience with fate and transport of contaminants in saturated/unsaturated porous media.
