Job Description:

Postdoctoral Scholar Position at Stanford University on Stormwater Use

Dear Colleagues:

I have a postdoctoral research position for an individual to work on organic contaminants in stormwater and their removal in passively operated systems.

A postdoctoral scholar position is available in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Stanford University to study the beneficial use of urban stormwater to augment local water supplies.  Projects are underway to assess urban stormwater capture and treatment, and the postdoctoral scholar will be conducting research primarily at the test-bed scale in northern and southern California.  Laboratory studies will complement the fieldwork to understand the mechanisms of contaminant removal in engineered media like woodchip, biochar and iron filings for removal of nutrients and contaminants found in urban stormwater.  Uptake and transformation by plants may also be undertaken. The postdoctoral scholar will coordinate the laboratory and fieldwork.  Research results will be used in an integrative mechanistic model of pollutant fate and transport in centralized stormwater capture, treatment and infiltration systems.

The research will occur under Richard Luthy and the umbrella of the NSF Engineering Research Center for ‘Reinventing America’s Urban Water Infrastructure’ with close collaboration with other researchers at UC Berkeley and Colorado School of Mines. The position involves trace organic analytical chemistry.

Applicants should have excellent communication and organizational skills; strong quantitative skills and the ability to work both independently and within collaborative teams; experience conducting laboratory experiments; and a desire to understand how stormwater systems are designed and regulated.  A PhD in Civil and Environmental Engineering or a related discipline is required.

Application Deadline:  June 1, 2016

Preferred Start Date:  Summer or early fall, 2016

Applicants should send a 2-page resume, a 1-page statement of motivation and qualifications, and the names, emails, and phone numbers of three references to  Please specify the application is for the post doctoral position on stormwater use.  Applicants are directed to for information about research currently underway in the Luthy Research Group and for information about ReNUWIt.
