The Indoor Aerosol and Exposure Laboratory in the Lyles School of Civil Engineering at Purdue University is currently recruiting motivated students to apply for Ph.D. positions (research assistantships) to start immediately. Our research focuses on characterizing the dynamics of airborne particles (nanoparticles, bioaerosols) in buildings and human exposure to indoor air pollutants. Our experimental research facilities are located at the Ray W. Herrick Laboratories as part of the interdisciplinary Center for High Performance Buildings (CHPB). Our research tools, along with those of Herrick/CHPB faculty, include state-of-the-art aerosol instrumentation (SMPS, HR-ELPI+, nCNC, WIBS, CPMA, CPCs, high resolution DMAs, impactors), living labs, and a variety of environmental chambers. Our work also takes us outside of the lab, for field campaigns, mobile aerosol studies, and personal exposure monitoring with portable and low-cost particle counters.
We are looking for students who have a passion for research and are motivated to apply engineering tools to solve air pollution and human health challenges facing our global society. Our research is primarily experimental in nature, and thus, prior experience working in a laboratory setting (for example, with analytical or aerosol instruments) is desirable. Experience with numerical modeling (e.g. in Matlab) and programming is also a plus.
