The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Illinois, USA invites applications and nominations for the position of Head of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering.

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (CEE at Illinois) consistently ranks among the most elite programs in the U.S. and the world for both undergraduate and graduate studies. The Department offers degrees at the bachelor, master, and doctoral levels, directing and engaging in innovative education and research programs that cover all major technical specializations of the profession. In addition the Department offers inter-disciplinary programs in Sustainable and Resilient Infrastructure Systems, Energy-Water-Environment Sustainability, and Societal Risk Management. CEE at Illinois currently consists of 53 full-time faculty members, 64 full-time staff members, 775 undergraduate students, 429 on-campus master's students, and 211 Ph.D. students. The Department offers excellent research facilities including the Advanced Transportation Research and Engineering Laboratory (ATREL), the Environmental Engineering and Science Laboratories, the Multi-Axial Full-Scale Sub-Structured Testing and Simulation Facility, the Newmark Structural Engineering Laboratory, and the Ven Te Chow Hydrosystems Laboratory. The Department's teaching facilities feature the Yeh Student Center, which includes include new state-of-the-art classrooms that accommodate on-line classes. Urbana-Champaign offers the residential advantages of a medium-sized university city, with excellent cultural opportunities, and high quality of life as reflected by its ranking as one of the Great Neighborhoods in America by the American Planning Association.

The Department Head is a tenured full Professor in Civil & Environmental Engineering and reports to the Dean of the College of Engineering. This position facilitates faculty excellence in the development of research, teaching, and public service. In addition, the Department Head serves as the Chief Executive Officer responsible for administrative, budgetary, hiring and promotion decisions. The search committee seeks candidates with a distinguished record of scholarly achievement and administrative leadership.

The successful candidate will:

  • Sustain and enhance the Department's role as the international leader in education and research;
  • Provide vision and leadership in defining the future of CEE in terms of scholarship, education, and the role of CEE faculty and students in addressing critical societal challenges;
  • Work with University leadership to integrate CEE vision with other strategic activities within the University;
  • Promote the Department through engagement with its 13,000 alumni and leaders within governmental and professional entities; and
  • Actively work with Department, College, and University development offices to sustain and enhance the fiscal health of the Department.
