The Association of Environmental Engineering and Science Professors (AEESP) is made up of professors in academic programs throughout the world who provide education in the sciences and technologies of environmental protection. Some of the programs represented in AEESP include:
Founded in 1963 as a private nonprofit organization, AEESP has grown to more than 700 members in universities throughout the world. The Association assists its members in improving education and research programs, encourages graduate education, and serves the profession by providing information to government agencies and the public, and provides direct benefits to its members.
Education and research in the environmental field are advanced by AEESP publications, conferences, workshops and lectures.
Experts within AEESP develop teaching manuals for specialized courses. Examples are Computer Software and two lab manuals: Environmental Engineering Unit Operations and Unit Processes and Aquatic Microbiology. These manuals are available from AEESP at a modest cost. Other publications include the Environmental Engineering Processes Laboratory Manual, which is available on CD.
AEESP conferences are held every two years to provide an opportunity for focused discussion of research frontiers and education innovations in environmental science and engineering. These popular conferences provide forums for formal and informal exchange of the concepts, methods and directions that move the environmental field forward in education and research. The AEESP-published proceedings are used by faculty, government and industry to set the agendas for education goals and research funding. Partial s upport for young faculty to attend the conferences also is provided by AEESP. In addition, regular meetings are held at major national conferences such as AWMA, AWWA, and WEF.
AEESP members present workshops in conjunction with major conferences in Environmental Engineering. Experts from AEESP provide up-to-date information that is directly useful in teaching and research that is not available in textbooks. Some recent topics include In Situ Bioremediation, Supercritical Extraction, and Expert Systems, Gas Transfer and Pollution Prevention.
AEESP sponsors an annual lecture tour by a distinguished scholar in environmental engineering. The lecturer visits approximately 15 universities, providing insight into the research that has brought him or her to prominence.
AEESP directly encourages graduate education in two ways: giving Ph.D. dissertation awards and publishing a Register of Environmental Engineering Graduate Programs. It also encourages graduate education in many indirect ways.
Special recognition is given annually to a young environmental engineer/scientist and their faculty advisor for the best doctoral dissertations relevant to the practice of environmental engineering. This prestigious recognition is accompanied by a cash award of $3000 for the student and a plaque and cash prize of $500 for the faculty advisor. Support for this dissertation award is provided by CH2M Hill..
First and second prize awards are also given to two outstanding students for their masters theses. These awards are sponsored by Montgomery-Watson-Hzzra, Inc.
A comprehensive Register of Environmental Engineering Graduate Programs is published every five years by AEESP. The Register contains information about faculty, course, admissions requirements, degrees and facilities for over 100 universities across North America. It is the major reference for faculty, undergraduate and graduate students, employers, government agencies and libraries. The Registry is currently undergoing revisions and will be available online in 2007.
AEESP also encourages graduate education by providing education resources that improve graduate education, by sponsoring the inspiring distinguished lectures, and by helping obtain research and training support for students.
AEESP effectively serves the profession by providing expert information to governments and by supporting related professional organizations.
Members of AEESP regularly are invited to testify before the US Congress concerning legislation affecting federal budgets for environmental research and education. Through face-to-face discussions and by means of its Research Directions documents, AEESP influences decisions on research directions and funding made by the US Environmental Protection Agency, the National Science Foundation and other federal agencies.
AEESP s a sponsoring organization for the American Academy of Environmental Engineers (AAEE) and the International Water Association (IWA). In addition, AEESP is a supporting sponsor of the USA National Committee (USANC) of the IWA.

The Association is administered by an elected Board of Directors who serve without stipend. The Board is comprised of nine members, three of whom are selected each year for a three-year term. The Board elects its own officers: President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer.
The work for the Association is carried out primarily by committees that report directly to the Board. Membership on committees is an excellent way to participate in AEESP activities and have a positive impact on the profession. Committee membership is open to all members is especially encouraged among the Association's young members.
Membership in AEESP offers important benefits to individuals, their programs, their students, and their profession. All individuals eligible for membership are urged to join the Association and to participate in the full range of benefits and opportunities.
in AEESP is open to all university staff members of professional rank (assistant, associate, and full professor), postdoctoral associates and students who are engaged in educational programs in the sciences and technologies of environmental protection. Postdoctoral associates are eligible for student membership. The annual dues vary with rank:

Application for regular membership is made by sending a completed application form and a brief, 2 page curriculum vitae to the Secretary after online payment. Alternatively, application materials may be mailed to the secretary with a check enclosed.
is open to individuals associated with academic programs who are not eligible for regular membership. These include instructors, adjunct professors, research professors, and individuals affiliated with institutions other than universities, but who also hold academic appointments in environmental engineering/science programs.
Application for affiliate membership is the same as for regular membership. The annual dues for affiliate members are $50.
is available to organizations employing environmental engineers and scientists and to individuals outside universities. Sustaining membership acknowledges the special relationship between AEESP and those who employ graduates of environmental engineering and science programs. The financial support provided by sustaining members allows the organization to carry out many special programs that benefit the organization, the profession and the employers. Sustaining members receive copies of all AEESP publications and are invited to all AEESP events. Annual dues for sustaining members are $500. Organizations or individuals desiring more information on sustaining membership should write to the Secretary.
