DESCRIPTION:

The School of Engineering at James Madison University is searching for two new faculty members to join their exciting new undergraduate Engineering degree program with a focus on sustainability and engineering design. We are seeking applicants at the Assistant/Associate level with a wide range of undergraduate teaching, scholarship (including engineering education scholarship), and curriculum development interests. A PhD in engineering, or a relevant doctorate with significant experience in an engineering setting, is required of all applicants. Target areas for these two searches are indicated below. · Applicants with a strong engineering science background and demonstrated teaching and scholarship interest in life cycle assessment and sustainability analysis should apply for posting number 0403132. · Applicants with demonstrated teaching and scholarship interest in the engineering design process should apply for posting number 0403131. This new and innovative engineering program provides students with coursework in engineering science, engineering design, systems analysis, sustainability, project management, and engineering business practices. Students complete a multi-year experiential design curriculum that includes integrating technical, financial, environmental, and societal aspects of sustainability into engineering design solutions while demonstrating effective oral and written interpersonal communication skills and mastery of the basic engineering sciences. Graduates of the program will demonstrate the skills needed to design and develop products, processes, and systems that simultaneously protect the environment, conserve natural resources, and meet human needs. Students will also be prepared to take the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam upon graduation. More information about this new program and its curriculum, faculty, and students can be found at http://www.jmu.edu/engineering. The successful candidate must demonstrate that they can function as a team member within an interdisciplinary program. Essential elements in developing this new program include the development of a unique culture and character among the faculty and students that includes creativity, flexibility and innovation. Demonstrated experience in innovative undergraduate teaching, providing meaningful research experiences for undergraduates, new program development, and course/curriculum design and assessment (along with a familiarity with the ABET assessment process) is preferred. JMU is a comprehensive university with an enrollment of approximately 17,000 undergraduate and 1,000 graduate students. We are located in the heart of the beautiful Shenandoah Valley of Virginia (two hours from Washington, D.C.) with easy access to outdoor destinations such as the Blue Ridge Parkway and the Appalachian Trail. JMU is regarded as one of the finest regional universities in the nation and has been cited in US News and World Report as the top public masters-level university in the south for the 15th consecutive year. JMU was also listed by the same publication as one of 35 colleges in the nation (and one of only 12 public colleges) recognized for excellence in undergraduate research opportunities. SRI International, one of the world’s leading independent research and development organizations, recently partnered with JMU to establish a new east-coast research center in the Shenandoah Valley. The new SRI research center is partnering with JMU in state-of-the art research areas including pharmaceuticals, engineering, nanotechnology, renewable energy, sustainability, information technology, and education. Applications will be accepted until both positions are filled, with review of applications to begin November 1, 2009. The anticipated start date for both positions is August 2010. Salary will be commensurate with an applicant’s experience and academic level. To apply for one of these positions go to https://JobLink.jmu.edu and search for the appropriate posting number indicated above. Note that only complete electronic submissions uploaded to the JMU JobLink system will be considered by the search committee. Paper applications or applications emailed directly to the search committee will not be considered.
