| DESCRIPTION: | Urban Systems and Sustainable Civil Infrastructure Position The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) at Rice University (http://ceve.rice.edu) invites applications for an assistant professor faculty position in urban systems and sustainable civil infrastructure. The position begins July 1, 2010 and is contingent on funding approval. We seek candidates with a comprehensive view of integrated urban systems and their physical infrastructures, with expertise in one or more of the following areas: life cycle engineering and management of civil infrastructure, ecologically responsible construction, design and retrofitting methods, computational modeling of complex urban systems, advanced structural materials and mechanics, complex water infrastructure systems and disaster response, infrastructure condition assessment and monitoring, geo-mechanics, advanced computational mechanics and multi-physics or multi-scale methods, stochastic mechanics, wind engineering, and coastal structures. A propensity to conduct interdisciplinary and policy-relevant research relating to urban systems and their sustainability is of interest, as well as emphasis on theoretical and quantitative methods for enhancing the sustainability of infrastructure systems. Successful candidates are expected to develop courses within the undergraduate infrastructure program in addition to graduate courses within their area of expertise. Rice University is a private research institution that occupies a 300-acre tree-shaded campus adjacent to Houston’s Museum District and the world’s renowned Texas Medical Center. The CEE Department currently includes 12 faculty members, is undergoing significant growth, and seeks to build on the interrelated area of urban systems and sustainable civil infrastructure. Required qualifications include a Ph.D. in an appropriate Engineering or related discipline, and evidence of excellence in teaching and research.
