| DESCRIPTION: | Faculty Position in Civil and Environmental Engineering at UCLA The Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in the Environmental Microbiology/Biotechnology area. The position is open at all levels. All candidates must hold an earned doctorate degree in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or a related field and demonstrate exceptional promise for high-quality teaching, research, and professional development. A tenured appointment will be considered for candidates with a recognized record of exceptional achievement. Candidates will be responsible for teaching undergraduate and graduate courses, developing and sustaining an extramurally funded sponsored research program, and participating in multi-disciplinary research efforts. Competitive applicants will have a demonstrated record of excellence in one or more of the following areas: (a) development and application of molecular biology tools to characterize and understand planktonic and biofilm bacteria in engineered and natural environmental systems; (b) modifying or optimizing biological processes to improve the performance of wastewater treatment or contaminant remediation systems; (c) developing biologically-based chemical and pathogen sensors or pathogen source tracking methodologies; (d) exploring the use of biological processes to reduce energy demand and carbon production in wastewater treatment plants; or (e) exploring production of biogas, biofuels, or biologically derived renewable energy. The Department houses well equipped laboratories and Department faculty participate in a number of centers, including the NSF Network for Earthquake Engineering Simulation Equipment Site for Field Testing and Monitoring of Structural Performance, the NSF Center for Embedded Networked Sensing, the NSF/EPA UC Center for Environmental Impacts of Nanotechnology, the California NanoSystems Institute, and the UCLA Water Technology Research Center. Formal screening is currently underway for a July 1, 2009 appointment. Applications will be accepted until both positions are filled.
