RANK: Post-Doc
INSTITUTION: Johns Hopkins University
DESCRIPTION:

JOINT POST-DOCTORAL POSITION TO ASSESS MERCURY CONTAMINATION AND TOXICITY IN SMALL CETACEANS AND IN THE CHESAPEAKE BAY WATERSHED Johns Hopkins University/National Aquarium Conservation Center The Department of Geography and Environmental Engineering at Johns Hopkins University (JHU) invites applicants for one post-doctoral research position. The selected applicant will assess mercury contamination and toxicity in global populations of small cetaceans (e.g., dolphins and porpoises) and in the Chesapeake Bay watershed. This will be a joint appointment between the Center for Contaminant Transport, Fate, and Remediation (CCTFR) and the National Aquarium Conservation Center (NACC). The primary objective is to conduct applied research to provide scientific understanding on mercury fate, transport and toxicity in marine mammals and in estuarine settings that contribute to environmental management decisions. The work involves a combination of field-scale monitoring and bench-scale evaluation of physical, chemical, and biological processes that influence the toxicity of mercury. The research work will be conducted at JHU in Baltimore, Maryland. The candidate will be integrated into an existing team of Ph.D. students under guidance from Prof. Ed Bouwer of JHU. The candidate will be responsible for significant contributions to peer review publications, technical reports, conference proceedings, and poster presentations. Candidates should have a Ph.D. in environmental engineering and science, environmental chemistry, environmental microbiology, chemical oceanography or related field. Good oral and written communication skills are essential. Experience in chemical and microbial processes in sediment and surface water systems, familiarity with a HPLC-ICP-MS and expertise in the chemical analysis for contaminants in tissue, water and sediment are desired. Also, the ability to perform collaborative research, as well as independent research, is desired. The position is available December 1, 2009 for a one-year term. The position is expected to be extended for 6 to 12 months contingent on funding availability and performance. Applicants are invited until the post-doctoral position is filled. Send application letter, CV, transcripts, list of publications and reprints, description of research expertise, and names and contact information for at least three research/academic references in a single pdf file to bouwer@jhu.edu.
