Environmental Fluid Mechanics | |
| RANK: | Ph.D. |
| INSTITUTION: | Johns Hopkins University |
| DESCRIPTION: | Pending the availability of external funding, Professor Markus Hilpert from the Department of Geography and Environmental Engineering at Johns Hopkins University is considering applications for PhD studies in the area of environmental fluid mechanics. The candidate should have a strong background in fluid mechanics and modeling and would join a vibrant research group consisting of three PhD students and a Research Associate Scientist (https://jshare.johnshopkins.edu/mhilper1/public_html/). Possible research topics include bacterial chemotaxis in subsurface systems, infiltration of contaminant droplets into soil, and pore-network modeling. Depending on the nature of the project, accompanying experimental work is possible. The candidate is expected to participate in the Center for Environmental and Applied Fluid Mechanics (http://www.jhu.edu/~ceafm/), which offers the opportunity to get research advice from first-rate researchers in the area of fluid mechanics. For US citizens and permanent residents, funding might be available for qualified candidates in the upcoming Fall 2009 semester through an IGERT program. There is a real possibility that funding will become available that could also be used for foreign students. The latter type of funding would allow for less freedom in the choice of the actual research topic. Interested applicants are welcome to send an email to Markus Hilpert (markus_hilpert@jhu.edu). After the initial contact, the applicant might be encouraged to submit a full application for PhD studies to the Department of Geography and Environmental Engineering. |
