The National Exposure Research Laboratory of EPA’s Office of Research and Development is seeking internationally recognized science leaders to fill the following positions: Director for the Microbiological and Chemical Exposure Assessment Research Division (MCEARD) - Cincinnati, Ohio. The primary focus of MCEARD’s research program is human exposures to contaminants in the water environment. As a critical research need for the EPA, MCEARD leads research to understand waterborne pathogen and indicator microbial ecology and their potential risk factors in both natural and engineered water systems. Novel approaches to assess human exposures to pathogens also are being sought. Improved detection methods and spatio-temporal measurements of microbial contaminants are needed to characterize human exposures from drinking and environmental waters to better assess and manage pathogen risks. Director for the Ecosystems Research Division (ERD) – Athens GA ERD research includes studies of the behavior of contaminants, nutrients, and biota in environmental systems, with the primary objective of developing mathematical models to interpret, assess, and/or predict exposures to stressors from natural and anthropogenic sources. Modern biochemical science tools and experimental process studies are applied to assess stressor behavior and impacts. Leading-edge computational technologies are developed to integrate core sciences into multi-media, multi-stressor, and multi-scale modeling systems that provide predictive capabilities for complex environmental exposures. Model development is supported by, and tightly coupled with, field and laboratory studies. Director for the Environmental Sciences Research Division (ESD) – Las Vegas NV ESD conducts research in the development and application of new methods and technologies to resolve issues of environmental exposures, especially as those exposures relate to spatial and temporal variability in the environment. ESD scientists address actual and potential exposures of ecosystems and humans to both traditional and nontraditional stressors at multiple scales and in response to policy and environmental practices. Relevant research approaches include landscape ecology, remote sensing of the atmosphere and biosphere, watershed modeling, development and application of sampling approaches and methods, state-of-the art analytical techniques for characterizing contaminants in the environment, and integration and analysis of multiple complex and spatially extensive datasets. These positions will be filled using EPA’s Title 42 Authority, which allows EPA to hire the highest caliber science leaders through renewable term appointments of up to 5 years and at annual salaries of up to $200,000, depending on qualifications, experience, and other factors. The candidate must have a doctoral level degree in a pertinent science discipline and extensive specialized experience.
