The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) at Florida International University (FIU) Invites nominations or applications for the position of Chairperson. Successful candidates should have a Ph.D. degree in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or a closely related field. The successful candidate will have demonstrated strong academic leadership and innovation. Responsibilities include student recruitment, faculty development, teaching, directing externally funded research, strong interaction with industry, and fundraising. The position is available starting as early as August 1, 2010. FIU is the state university in Miami, Florida, with more than 39,000 students in programs leading up to the doctoral level. FIU is a comprehensive Carnegie Research University in the High Research Activity Category and one of the fastest growing and largest public research universities in the United States. In recent years, the university has added a law school and has opened its first class of the new medical school. CEE is one of the six departments of the College of Engineering and Computing at FIU. The College experienced major expansion in recent years, with the addition of several new academic and research programs, including biomedical engineering, nanotechnology (nano‐electronics and entrepreneurship), and green engineering and sustainability. CEE currently offers B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in Civil Engineering and B.S. and M.S. degrees in Environmental Engineering. The BS in Civil Engineering and BS in Environmental Engineering programs are accredited by ABET. Undergraduate enrollment is currently about 500 and graduate enrollment is about 200, including 50 Ph.D. students. The department is very active in research and houses a large number of research personnel and visiting researchers. External research funding reached $3.7 million last year and is expected to grow significantly, given the regional and university emphasis on infrastructure, transportation, environment, and sustainability. The Titan America Structural and Construction Laboratory, Wind Engineering Laboratory, and Integrated Intelligent Transportation Laboratory are the state‐of‐the‐art and have attracted significant research funding from federal, regional, state, and local sources. The department also houses the Lehman Center for Transportation Research and a NASA Group 4 University Research Center that focuses on water resources and ecosystems research. The department has formed a strong partnership with the local water and sewer department in a joint effort of education and research. The department also has a center that conducts significant training and technology transfer activities. There exist special opportunities for the department to interact with the Department of Construction Management, International Hurricane Center, Applied Research Center, Metropolitan Center, Southeast Research Center, Institute of Public Opinion Research, and other departments, research centers, and institutes at FIU.
