After three to four months the person appointed will relocate to the AUW campus in Chittagong, Bangladesh. Imperial College London and the AUW are collaborating to establish a Graduate School of Environmental Engineering and Sustainable Development at the Asian University for Women. This Graduate School is intended to emerge as a Centre of Excellence for training engineers who will have a superb capacity in policy analysis and in devising practical and technologically sound applications for remediation of the many environmental problems facing Asia. The AUW Graduate School of Environmental Engineering and Sustainable Development will offer a two-year Masters degree for those who will have already completed three and half years of undergraduate education at AUW. The Masters course will focus on the following key environmental concerns: (i) Water and sanitation; (ii) Waste management; (iii) Control and management of industrial pollution; (iv) Management of environmental problems associated with agriculture and aquaculture; and (v) Forest management/land use management. After completing three and half years of undergraduate education in the liberal arts and sciences, selected AUW students will have an opportunity to enrol in this Masters program. AUW and Imperial College now seek a seasoned but entrepreneurial Environmental Engineering professional, preferably with an MSc and PhD who has a keen appreciation of the challenges of establishing a new engineering program in a developing country, to serve on the AUW faculty as the Director of Environmental Engineering Program Development. The incumbent will be an experienced educator with a knowledge of innovations in engineering education and curriculum development. S\he should have had success in writing grant proposals and be able to work with others across cultures with different sets of resources and constraints. The first three to four months of this appointment, starting in June 2009, will be based at Imperial College, London. Subsequently, the position will be based at the AUW campus in Chittagong. The key assignments for this position fall into two categories: a) During the first part of the assignment, the person will be responsible for developing a detailed framework for creating a Masters course in environmental engineering at AUW. S\he will articulate the program goals, standards, and assessment pieces, as well as the courses, student experiences, and learning approaches that support the program goals; identify characteristics and training of faculty needed to implement the graduate program; define the facilities and equipment that would be needed to implement the course as designed; address potential for industry linkages and support; and provide a road map for accreditation by internationally recognized authorities. The resulting report should also provide a detailed 5-year budget for launching and operating the Environmental Engineering Program at AUW. These issues will need to be presented in the form of a grant proposal to enable AUW to obtain funding for the establishment of the school. b) The person appointed will need to work together with ICL and AUW to identify the key competencies required as prerequisites to the graduate program. Following the initial period at Imperial College, the person appointed will join the AUW faculty in Chittagong to work with the Provost and Dean of Undergraduate Studies in developing undergraduate courses that result in competencies which prepare students for the MSc course in Environmental Engineering and Sustainable Development. S\he will provide overall leadership in the creation of the Graduate School of Environmental Engineering and Sustainable Development at AUW. |
