Post-doctoral Research Opportunity

Post-doctoral Research Opportunity

The Department of Energy, Environmental and Chemical Engineering at Washington University in St. Louis invites applications for a Post-Doctoral Research Associate position. The successful candidate will participate in a Department of Energy-sponsored project to investigate the stability of biologically- and abiotically produced uranium(IV) products in reducing sediments (http://ssrl.slac.stanford.edu/sfa/). Emphasis will be given to isolating key reactions/products and quantifying the rates of uranium oxidation and release in sediments. Laboratory experiments will be coupled to field-based studies at the Old Rifle DOE-BER IFRC site. When integrated with team partner research, this work will lead to geochemical models of fundamental processes that govern long-term stability/performance of naturally reduced uranium and stimulated bioremediation technologies. Applicants are sought who have expertise in quantitative aqueous geochemistry. Experience with modeling of chemical equilibrium and kinetics or field experience are also desirable. The post-doctoral researcher will work as part of a multi-institution team that will integrate aqueous geochemistry (Washington University), environmental microbiology (with Dr. Rizlan Bernier-Latmani of Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne), and X-ray absorption and scattering techniques (with Dr. John Bargar of the Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Laboratory). Applicants must have a Ph.D. in environmental engineering, geochemistry, or a closely related field.

This is a highly collaborative project that requires close interaction between the program participants. Students and post doctoral associates will interact with program participants at collaborating laboratories. The project will involve travel and cross-disciplinary training among the three participating institutions.

The position is available as early as March 1, 2010.  The appointment will be for one year, with possibility of renewals for subsequent years. Applications received before February 12, 2010 will be given priority review; however, applications will be accepted until the position is filled. Salary is negotiable, commensurate with qualifications and experience, and the position carries benefits.

Interested applicants should submit by email or regular mail an application letter describing qualifications and research interests, a curriculum vitae, and the names and contact information of three references to Daniel Giammar.
