INSTITUTION: University of Alberta
DESCRIPTION:

Postdoctoral Fellow in Membrane Treatment Processes
Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering
University of Alberta

A postdoctoral research position is available to conduct research on desalination of brackish water derived from oil sands operations using membrane treatment processes (e.g., ion exchange and electrodialysis). This research project will focus on the identification of the most cost-effective and energy-efficient water treatment train to produce fit-for-purpose water for the oil sands industry, such as make-up water for bitumen extraction, heat exchangers, boiler make up water for upgrading and steam assisted gravity drainage (SAGD) operations, or for release to the environment.

Applicants should hold a PhD, have a background in membrane treatment processes and preferably on membrane synthesis and development. A strong track record of refereed journal publications is desired. Excellent communication (oral and written) and interpersonal skills are required. The successful candidate will work in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering with Dr. M Gamal El-Din and Dr. Y Liu. The candidate will be expected to assist in the training and mentoring of graduate students and writing research proposals. Teaching experience can be arranged if desired.

The appointment will begin in February, 2010 or as soon as the position is filled, for an initial appointment of one year with the possibility of renewal for two more years upon satisfactory performance. A competitive stipend will be awarded depending on the level of experience. Please send a cover letter, CV, the names and contact information (address, phone number and email address) of three referees and one most relevant sample publication to:
