Hydrogeochemistry

Hydrogeochemistry

RANK: Post Doctoral
INSTITUTION: University at Buffalo
DESCRIPTION:

The Department of Geology at University at Buffalo invites applications for one post-doctoral research position. The successful candidate will participate in a multi-institutional, National Science Foundation-sponsored project to investigate the reactivity of hydrophobic and moderately hydrophobic compounds (chlorofluorocarbons) in low-carbon content sedimentary aquifers. Emphasis will be given to isolating key reactions and quantifying rates of sorption and desorption in sediments and specifically to thermally altered carbonaceous matter (TACM). Laboratory experiments will be coupled with isotherm modeling to create a dynamic model of these compounds across a wide range of concentrations. The isotherms and parameters deduced will be used to evaluate conditions of significant retardation in low-organic carbon aquifers, contributing to the applicability of using these solutes for ground water dating as well addressing broader contaminant fate and transport concerns. Applicants are sought who have expertise in quantitative aqueous geochemistry, with specific expertise in volatile organic compounds. Experience with modeling of chemical equilibrium and kinetics, and excellent communication skills are also desirable. Applicants must have a Ph.D. in Environmental Geochemistry, Environmental Engineering (with an emphasis on geochemistry), or a closely related area. The candidate will be responsible for significant contributions to peer review publications, technical reports, conference proceedings, and poster presentations. The position is available for fall 2010. The appointment will be for one year, with possibility of renewals for subsequent years. Applications received before March 21, 2010 will be given priority review; however, applications will be accepted until the position is filled. Salary is negotiable, commensurate with qualifications and experience and includes benefits. UB is a premier research-intensive public university, and hosts a dynamic and active hydrogeology research program. We collect and study information about ground water flow and contaminant transport using field experiments and/or monitoring, hydraulic and tracer testing, detailed laboratory experiment, geophysical surveys, or even satellite imagery to attack these problems. We maintain strong collaborative research ties with the Chemistry, Civil, Environmental and Structural Engineering Departments and others across campus. Graduates of our program are currently employed at national labs, government agencies and consulting firms across North America.
