Job Announcement (NSF EPSCoR, Sustainability Solutions Initiative) Assistant/Associate Professor, Watershed Modeling The Senator George J. Mitchell Center at the University of Maine (UMaine) invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in watershed modeling at the assistant or associate professor level with a research emphasis in spatially-explicit watershed modeling in the context of sustainability science. The successful candidate will join UMaine’s Sustainability Solutions Initiative (SSI), which is led by the Mitchell Center and funded by a 5-year, $20 million NSF EPSCoR grant. This is one of four new faculty positions supported by SSI. The successful candidate will participate in interdisciplinary research to develop and implement models of coupled natural-human systems. Potential departmental affiliations at UMaine include Civil and Environmental Engineering, Earth Sciences, Forest Resources, and Plant, Soil and Environmental Sciences. The ideal candidate will have experience creating and using physically-based, spatially distributed watershed models at multiple scales to understand and solve water quality problems involving sediment, nutrients, and contaminants. Preference will be given to candidates with experience in: (a) collecting and incorporating field data into watershed models using GIS and other tools, (b) integrating land-use and climate change scenarios for watershed analysis and assessment, and (c) developing and utilizing decision-tools in diverse stakeholder and watershed settings to improve best management practices and decision-making. Requirements are a Ph.D. degree in an appropriate field (e.g., Civil, Environmental, Biosystems, Ecological, or Bioresource Engineering; Earth Sciences; Forestry; Hydrology; Water Resources; or a related discipline), high quality publications, and relevant teaching experience. The successful applicant will teach undergraduate and graduate courses related to their area(s) of expertise and in support of SSI, develop an externally-funded research program, train M.S. and Ph.D. students, and actively engage in service to the profession, the university and the state.
