Duties & Responsibilities A position is available in the Environmental Engineering Chemistry Laboratories of the Harvard School of Engineering and Applied Sciences. The position has two main responsibilities: (1) the development of the undergraduate curriculum to support experiential learning in the laboratory and through field trips; and (2) the training of graduate students in the use of instrumentation, including introduction to data analysis and interpretation, as well as routine maintenance and trouble-shooting of the instrumentation. This staff position reports to the Director of Instructional Laboratories and to a professor of Environmental Engineering. The philosophy behind this reporting structure is to ensure thorough integration of this staff position within the SEAS undergraduate and graduate experience for Environmental Science and Engineering (ESE) students. The initial activities associated with this staff position include: Successfully continuing the lab components of ES164 - Soil and Environmental Chemistry and ES165 - Water Engineering. Continuing and further optimizing a new effort that was initiated this year for laboratory components of ES6 - Environmental Science and Technology. Arranging and enhancing field trips for ES6 (e.g., Deer Island Wastewater Treatment Plant, the Cambridge Drinking Water Treatment Plant, and the MIT Power Plant). Developing and continuing of the lab components of the new course ES265 - Advanced Water Treatment, which is an extension of ES165. Assisting Environmental Engineering undergraduates and their faculty advisors in successful completion of senior design projects. Closely working with the Assistant Dean for Academic Programs with respect to the sustainable implementation of a January experience for ESE undergraduates. Responsibility for institutional knowledge in the operation of, as well as the ongoing maintenance of, analytical equipment and procedures in the Environmental Engineering Chemistry Laboratories. Basic Qualifications A minimum of a Master's degree in environmental engineering, chemical engineering, chemistry, or other related discipline is required, plus at least eight years of experience in analytical chemistry, such as with liquid and gas chromatography, mass spectrometry, or atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Additional Qualifications A Ph.D. in environmental engineering, chemical engineering, chemistry or other related discipline is preferred. Experience working in a higher education environment is a big plus. The College experienced major expansion in recent years, with the addition of several new academic and research programs, including biomedical engineering, nanotechnology (nano‐electronics and entrepreneurship), and green engineering and sustainability. CEE currently offers B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in Civil Engineering and B.S. and M.S. degrees in Environmental Engineering. The BS in Civil Engineering and BS in Environmental Engineering programs are accredited by ABET. Undergraduate enrollment is currently about 500 and graduate enrollment is about 200, including 50 Ph.D. students. The department is very active in research and houses a large number of research personnel and visiting researchers. External research funding reached $3.7 million last year and is expected to grow significantly, given the regional and university emphasis on infrastructure, transportation, environment, and sustainability. The Titan America Structural and Construction Laboratory, Wind Engineering Laboratory, and Integrated Intelligent Transportation Laboratory are the state‐of‐the‐art and have attracted significant research funding from federal, regional, state, and local sources. The department also houses the Lehman Center for Transportation Research and a NASA Group 4 University Research Center that focuses on water resources and ecosystems research. The department has formed a strong partnership with the local water and sewer department in a joint effort of education and research. The department also has a center that conducts significant training and technology transfer activities. There exist special opportunities for the department to interact with the Department of Construction Management, International Hurricane Center, Applied Research Center, Metropolitan Center, Southeast Research Center, Institute of Public Opinion Research, and other departments, research centers, and institutes at FIU.
