The RESTORE Research Group at Western University and the Ecohydrology Research Group at University of Waterloo are seeking PhD students to work on an integrated project that will assess the impacts of groundwater-surface water interactions on nutrient and pathogen dynamics along beaches of the Great Lakes. This collaborative research project involves a multi-disciplinary team of researchers from RESTORE, the Ecohydrology Research Group and Environment Canada’s National Water Research Institute. The project will combine intensive field studies on Great Lake beaches with innovative laboratory investigations and advanced mechanistic computer modeling. Three PhD positions are available in the areas of groundwater hydrology, groundwater-surface water interactions, microbiology and biogeochemistry. Applicants should have experience in either: (a) designing and implementing field sampling and monitoring systems, (b) numerical groundwater, reactive transport and/or colloid transport modeling, or (c) advanced geochemical or microbiological analytical techniques. The successful candidates will work in cutting-edge research groups and institutes. The RESTORE Research Group (http://www.eng.uwo.ca/research/restore/) was recently awarded over $6 M to conduct field, experimental and modelling investigations focused on groundwater issues. It is a dynamic research group that includes 20 graduate students, 6 postdoctoral fellows and three laboratory technicians. The Ecohydrology Research group (http://uwaterloo.ca/ecohydrology/) is funded through the Canada Excellence Research Chair program, and includes a diverse team of over 30 students and staff occupying newly renovated laboratories. Western University and University of Waterloo are located in Southern Ontario and are leading Canadian academics institutions that are committed to excelling as innovative research intensive universities.
