Job Description

The Goel lab in the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering at the University of Utah is looking to recruit a postdoctoral researcher to join the team starting in the Spring or Summer of 2025. The postdoc will work on an NSF-funded “Rule of Life” project related to toxic benthic cyanobacterial mats in freshwater streams.

The postdoc will work on projects focused on understanding the role of nutrients in supporting the growth of toxic and non-toxic genotypes co-existing in benthic mats, the overall microbial ecology, and the transcriptomics related to toxin production, phosphorus, and nitrogen cycling. This would require the postdoc to have a deep background in computational bioinformatics and significant data analyses. This collaborative project is with the University of Nevada Reno and George Mason University. The postdoc will also be expected to mentor graduate and undergraduate students in the lab, contribute to collaborative research projects, and prepare reports and manuscripts for publication, among other scholarly activities, with the supervision of Dr. Goel. They will be encouraged to participate in grant writing, conference presentations, and professional and career development activities. Candidates with a background in Environmental Engineering & Microbiology, Microbial Ecology, and Computational and molecular biology are encouraged to apply. The candidate is required to have a PhD in one of the aforementioned research areas. Additional skills required are good communication and writing skills, the ability to work in a synergistic environment, and experience with analytical methods such as GC-FID, GC-MS, and HPLC.
