The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of South Florida (USF) invites applications for an open-rank tenure-track faculty position (Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Professor) in Environmental Engineering, with an intended start date of August 1, 2026.
The ideal candidate will be a rising or established leader with demonstrated potential for high-impact research, demonstrated commitment to teaching and mentoring appropriate to career stage, and the ability to work collaboratively with colleagues from Environmental Engineering and throughout the USF campuses. Appointment of the selected candidate will be made at a rank commensurate with the candidate’s experience and qualifications. We seek candidates with research expertise in any area of Environmental Engineering that complements existing faculty within the Department, either by building on existing strengths or by opening new avenues for collaborative research. Hiring selection will be based principally on the potential of the candidate to contribute to the missions of the Department, the College of Engineering, and the University, rather than on the candidate’s particular rank or research specialty. We seek candidates who are collaborative, forward-thinking, and eager to contribute to a growing program with a clear vision for the future.
The selected candidate will join a dynamic and collaborative Environmental Engineering program that values innovation, interdisciplinary research, and faculty empowerment. Our Environmental Engineering graduate program was ranked 48th nationally and 29th among U.S. public universities by U.S. News & World Report (2024). Our department boasts nationally recognized faculty, including AEESP Fellows and Fulbright Scholars, and maintains active leadership in professional societies. We offer a collegial environment with shared governance and reduced teaching loads for junior faculty. The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering offers PhD, master’s, and ABET-accredited bachelor’s degrees in Environmental Engineering and in Civil Engineering. Located in the vibrant Tampa Bay area—home to top-ranked beaches, a flourishing downtown, and rich opportunities for collaboration with state agencies and environmental organizations—this is a place where faculty thrive both professionally and personally.
Applications should consist of the following materials combined into a single PDF file: (1) cover letter (not to exceed two pages) indicating the reasons for your interest and your alignment with the advertised position; (2) curriculum vitae; (3) names and contact information (e-mail and phone) for three references; (4) statement on research and teaching (not to exceed three pages). The research section should describe your accomplishments, your future research plans, a strategy for securing funding to support future research, and a vision for your future research group at USF. The teaching section should discuss your prior teaching and mentoring experience, your approach or philosophy towards teaching and mentoring, and your future teaching interests within our department (which will likely consist of a combination of existing classes in our program and new classes in your specialty area).
Applicants must electronically submit the application packet as one PDF file to the following web site: https://jobs.usf.edu/hcmUI/CandidateExperience/en/sites/USF/jobs?keyword=42027 (USF job ID code 42027). Questions about the position should be directed to Professor Jeffrey Cunningham (cunning@usf.edu), the chairperson of the search committee. Dual-career couples with questions about opportunities are encouraged to contact the Department chairperson, Professor Manjriker Gunaratne (gunaratn@usf.edu).
